Summer External Student Worker - Upstream Process Development considering undergrad and grad students
The Novartis Technical Research & Development (TRD) Department drives the advancement of the Adeno-associated Virus (AAV) and Lentiviral Vector (LVV) production platforms and manages the development, scale-up, scale-down, transfer, optimization, and characterization of processes for the clinical and commercial manufacturing of both new and licensed Novartis gene therapy products.
The Upstream Process Development Intern supports laboratory operations in experimental design/execution and platform development project planning/execution. The Upstream Intern, operating under the direct supervision of experts, executes and documents experimental procedures in support of process development activities supporting investigational and clinical Cell and Gene Therapy programs.
Responsibilities
Participates in process development efforts under the direction of more senior engineers and scientists.
Executes experiments and analyzes acquired data that contribute to early development projects and scale up studies to optimize of AAV/ LVV manufacturing processes under team mentorship.
Works collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
Maintains good documentation practices and accurate records of experiments.
Communicates and presents results at group and department meetings.
Minimum Requirements
Currently enrolled in bachelor’s or graduate program in chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, biological science, pharmaceutical science, biomanufacturing, or related scientific discipline.
Minimum 3.0 GPA
Completed at least two years of college education before beginning internship.
English language proficiency.
Must be enrolled in school the semester following the internship.
Competed lab coursework in organic chemistry, biology, microbiology, mammalian cell culture, genetics, and other related scientific disciplines.
Experience with bioreactor operation including Sartorius AMBR250, benchtop and pilot scale bioreactors and coursework in statistical analysis principles and software is not required but preferred.
Lab work involving aseptic technique and AAV or LVV vector production is not required but preferred.
Ability to work, troubleshoot, and problem-solve independently and in teams.
Excellent written, verbal, communication, and interpersonal skills.
